A small oasis: The Goustera fields at Nestos

When Dimitris and Maria Loutsigkas planted kiwis for the first time on the land in Chrysoupolis/Kavala they didn't just harvest good fruit, they also had a vision. From the very beginning they avoided using artificial fertilizers and pesticides – at that time, an unusual way of doing things.

Today, the area of land that they worked back then is ten times as big, and besides kiwis, pomgranates and persimons, it produces different sorts of other fruit, some wine and of course vegetables for the own use. It is an experimental field on which we can try new cultivation methods and crops. Directly on the border of the river Nestos nature reserve, a small oasis has evolved. The ecosystem here is home to an unusual amount of plants and wildlife. The existence of many different reptiles, birds and mammals that can be seen in this area, put more emphasis on our philosophy – that respecting nature gets the best results.

Optimal conditions: extremely fertile land seated between mountains and the sea, hot summers, enough water, high humidity, significant temperature fluctuations during harvesting time and short hard winters.

Guaranteed organic quality: certified organic production, constantly monitored by the independent Fysiologiki Association; added to this, ecologically sound agricultural techniques such as green manuring and droplet irrigation.

Quality rather than quantity: No artificial fertilizers, no pesticides (therefore a reduction in crop yields and more work intensive eg. combatting weeds). There are ''Safety zones'' to provide distance from neighbouring conventional farmland, and the planting of Cypress and Thuja hedges as well as using vines as a natural protection against drifting pesticides.

Our partners' fields also produce high quality harvests.
